Book Review: Christian Meditation
Christian Meditation
Contemplative Prayer for a New Generation
Novalis
1996
Paul Harris is a former director of the Christian Meditation Centre in London. This book acknowledges the difficulties that many Christians discover on their first encounter with contemplative prayer and offers a clear, practical guide to daily practice of meditation.
The author addresses the most frequently asked questions and most commonly held misconceptions about this spiritual discipline. He also discusses other aspects of Christian meditation, such as: the mantra and its role in meditation, the body in meditation, unity with other faiths, starting a meditation group, commitment and perseverance, spiritual guidance, etc.
He draws primarily on the teaching of Scripture and that of the Benedictine monk John Main, as well as John Cassian, the 4th century Desert monks, and the Cloud of Unknowing.
